This is just the kind of mystery I love. The picture of a little girl found between two Civil War bodies; one Confederate; One Union. The other found in the backpack of a slain Union soldier.
The mystery is important because these soldiers and their lives matter. Finding out who they are may be impossible, but it may not...

That is very interesting. I know there is a good deal of photo syn technology out that could age the girls a bit and then scan other pictures for the same facial features. Either way I am just amazed that we do know as much as we do considering they were not great about keeping records back then.

I am thinking of so many stories right now...wish I could write historical fiction!

I was thinking when I read this that someone could have died and the family was never told! I would wonder if you could pull a list of soldiers killed at the battle and their families and ages, but with the thousands killed it would take forever. It, also, bugs me when people complain how many have been lost in the War on Terror - seriously people that has been in 10 years. In the Civil War, they would have considered that a bad hour! I think we've forgotten how broad a swath it cut across the country.
As for historical fiction, couldn't you see descendents of the North and South soldiers both researching and then falling in love?
